• What Is the difference between gap filling and strip filling?

  Gap filling is part of our wood floor restoration services. It is common for gaps to appear between the floorboards or between the parquet blocks over time. The smaller gaps are relatively easy to ractify by the gap filling service, where a mixture of clear resin and saw dust, which is collected from the sanding process is used to fill in the gaps. Nevertheless, it should be noted that bigger gaps are trickier to fill. This is where strip filling comes to help.

  Strip filling uses small pine slivers between the floorboards and goes together with resin & saw dust filler. While this is often an effective method, it is not ideal solution for larger areas as it can spoil the look of the timber floors.

  Important note for both gap filling methods is that they are dependant on the solidness of the floorboards. Stability of both depends on absence of movement in the floorboards or in the joists that hold the floorboards. Therefore, gap filling for floorboards is excluded from the service guarantee of flooring companies.

• Should I use varnish or oil for my parquet flooring?

  Thank you for your question regarding parquet floor restoration.

  Both lacquers and hardwax-oils can be used to seal parquet floors, but there are key differences to consider:

  Wood Floor Lacquers:

  • Durability: More hard-wearing and durable, providing long-lasting protection.

  • Ideal Use: Recommended for floors with high foot traffic.

  • Popular Products: Bona Mega, Bona Traffic, Loba Viva, Junckers HT700.

  • Solvent-Based Varnishes: Offer a thick layer of protection but emit strong odors, making them less suitable for residential use.

  Oil-Based Wood Finishes (Hardwax-Oils):

  • Maintenance: Less hard-wearing, requiring more frequent maintenance and recoating.

  • Aesthetic: Provide a more natural look and feel to the floors.

  • Popular Products: Osmo Polyx hardwax-oils.

  Choosing between the two depends on your specific needs for durability and aesthetic appeal.

• Can you repair parquet flooring if blocks are missing?

  Hi and thank you for contacting us regarding parquet floor restoration and repair.

  We regularly restore and repair parquet flooring where blocks are missing or damaged. In such cases we always try to source reclaimed or new parquet blocks which match the size of the existing flooring. If the parquet blocks that you have sourced have bitumen residue, however, we would not recommend their use simply because removing the bitumen is a very difficult and time consuming thing to do, which makes the whole process of parquet floor restoration very expensive. Therefore, we would advise you to use new parquet flooring instead or to contact a professional parquet floor restoration company like Floorworks™ to do this for you.

• What is the lead time for your floor sanding services?

  Lead times can vary, but usually we accommodate works within 2 weeks even in the summer when there is higher demand for the service. We do get cancellations and availability can be random, best is to check with member of the team if your floor restoration works are urgent.

• How long it takes before for the floors to be used again after sanding service?

  During the restoration service, the floors can handle light traffic without disrupting the process.

  During the sealing process, the floors can be used between coats. After the final coat is applied, lacquered floors can accommodate foot traffic in 2 hours, while hardwax-oil floors require 5-10 hours, depending on air humidity and the season. Furniture should be moved back into place the following day.

• How many coats of lacquer are included in your service?

  For domestic floor sanding services, we apply 1 coat of primer followed by 2 coats of lacquer. The final sheen options are extra-matt, matt, satin, and gloss.

  For floor sanding in public spaces (offices, schools, church halls), we use 1 coat of primer and 3 coats of commercial-grade lacquer, with sheen options including extra-matt, matt, and satin.

  Extra coats are available upon request, but we do not recommend more than 5 coats, including primer. You can find the full list of floor finishes we use here.
